Background information on sanitation in Brazil: According to the latest available official demographic census conducted in 2010 by the government-based IBGE institute, in Brazil 2,64% of the permanent private homes have no access to bathroom or basic sanitation (it was 6,96% in the previous census, ten years earlier). Brazil’s huge regional disparity is also seen through these indicators. In the Northeast region, 7,81% of the homes have no sanitation (20,88% in 2000), whereas in the Southeast region, more industrialised, the figure is 0,38% (1,26% in 2000). Focusing on the wealthiest region alone, the Southeast, the two main states also show some differences. The state of Sao Paulo, Brazil’s powerhouse, has only 0,07% of its homes without sanitation (0,23% in 2000), whereas in Rio de Janeiro, 0,13% (0,52% in 2000). Now looking at the State of Rio de Janeiro, in an article from August 2013 in Rio’s main newspaper, O Globo, more specific figures from an official 2012 report conducted by the state company for water and sewage, CEDAE, shows that only 39,2% of the population from the municipalities with which CEDAE has contracts offer sewerage systems. The company says it charges for sewage treatment in 3 municipalities from Rio de Janeiro State (Rio, São Gonçalo e Maricá) even though it has contracts with 33 municipalities. And in 21 neighbourhoods from the city of Rio’s West Zone, despite paying for CEDAE’s service, the sewage is poured into pluvial galleries. The city of Rio de Janeiro, according to official federal figures (Minitry of the Cities 2011), even though 77,8% of the population has access to CEDAE’s network, only 51,9% of the sewage is treated. But in other municipalities of Rio de Janeiro State, like Queimados at Baixada Fluminense and other 20 cities with contracts with CEDAE, there’s no treatment at all. This set of pictures for WSUP’s exhibition to take place in London in November 2014, I decided to portray a little bit of Braz

As she has no toilet at home, she must walk some distance and pay to use a public toilet, of which she says, "With the public toilet, because of the stench, I always have to take a bath and change after using it, before I can be among people and sell my rice. There's even the possibility of contracting a disease because of the number of people who use it, and the heat that emanates from the toilet."

Fabiola Vega, 69, lives in Cumbayá, a valley near Quito, Ecuador. She grew up in a time when there was only one bathroom to serve many families. From the time she was 7 until she turned 21 she had to share a bathroom with no shower with 20 other people who lived in her condominium (these were apartments that had a patio in the center, the bathroom was usually near the patio so everyone could see when it was occupied.) She now lives in an apartment with five bathrooms. Her bathroom is the biggest one. Fabi loves her house, she enjoys landscaping and has a special relationship with her plants.
